One of the most important rights we possess in the United States is the right to defend ourselves. The 2nd Amendment to the Bill of Rights in the U.S. Constitution makes sure our right to own and bear arms will not be infringed.
Unfortunately, our college campuses have been declared “gun free” zones leaving students defenseless to those seeking to do harm. Colleges cannot guarantee safety, there is no one entry point with metal detectors and armed guards performing pat-downs and bag inspections. Florida law should not deprive students of the ability to protect themselves.
For the past 2 sessions, we have been fighting for our student’s right to defend themselves on college campuses. For the past two sessions Senator Miguel Diaz de la Portilla refused to allow the campus carry bill to be heard in the Judiciary Committee where he served as chairman. The good news is that he paid a price at the ballot box in November, HE LOST!
So here is the good news, HB 6005 has been filed by Representative Scott Plakon and it has identical language to the prior bills filed in the previous sessions. Last year’s campus carry legislation was sponsored by Representative Greg Steube and he was just elected to the Florida Senate. Senator Greg Steube is now the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Along with Greg Steube, there were several House Representatives with strong pro-gun records just elected to the Senate, including Debbie Mayfield and Dennis Baxley.
We have a great opportunity this session with new leadership to pass campus carry legislation.
Is the 3rd time a charm?
Make no mistake, the anti-gun rights crowd will be out in full force. We will be in Tallahassee to take them head on, but we need your help to win this victory for students.
We need YOU to “TAKE ACTION”!
